In this lesson students will participate in a simulation that will provide a deeper understanding of the causes and stages of the French Revolution. Lesson includes simulation of the Three Estates, Tennis Court Oath and trial of Louis XVI.

Objectives:

  1. Students will explore the causes of the French Revolution, life during the French Revolution, and the aftermath of the French Revolution.
  2. Students will make connections to other revolutions: American and Glorious Revolutions.
  3. Students will understand what sacrifices must be made for revolution and the idea of freedom, and what happens when people lose sight of their purpose.

Lesson 2: Anatomy of a Revolution

In this lesson students will use a model of a revolution to analyze the French Revolution. Students will be working in groups to come up with examples that fit the model.

Objectives:

  1. Students will analyze the components leading up to the French Revolution using the Anatomy of a Revolution model by Crane Brinton. (Brinton Crane. Anatomy of a Revolution) http://www.historyteacher.net/EuroProjects/ExamReviewSheets/AnatomyOfARevolution.htm
  2. Students will draw conclusions about the French Revolution and write about those conclusions.

In this lesson students will be comparing the ideas of the documents generated by the three Revolutions: The American Revolution, The French Revolution, and The Glorious Revolution. Lesson 4: Napoleonic Stage & The Congress of Vienna In this lesson students will learn about the Napoleonic Stage of French history and take part in a simulation of the Congress of Vienna.

Objectives:

  1. Students compare contrast the Glorious Revolution in England, American & French Revolutions and their enduring effects on world expectations for self-government & individual liberty today.
  2. Students will gain more experience looking at and working with primary documents.
  3. Students will work in groups and present findings to the class.

In this lesson students will learn about the Napoleonic Stage of French history and take part in a simulation of the Congress of Vienna.

Objectives:

  1. Students will learn about the model of revolution and the final outcome for France.
  2. Students will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of Napoleon’s reign.
  3. Students will partake in a simulation of the Congress of Vienna and learn to negotiate and compromise to achieve goals.
